Nursing Scholarship

The Dorothy Gaines Banks Nursing Scholarship was established to support funding for minority students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the field of Nursing in the Jacksonville area. Black/African American students are strongly encouraged to apply. 

Scholarship Requirements:

• Candidate must be enrolled in a nursing program (BSN, ADN, or LPN) and in good scholastic standing with a 2.75 GPA or higher at the time of the application
• Candidate will have preferably two semesters of nursing school remaining. (One semester remaining may be individually evaluated.)
• Essay (see guidelines below)
• Official Transcript from the School of Nursing (Coded electronic copy is acceptable)
• Letter of Recommendation from the Dean or Director of the Nursing School, or from one of the candidate’s Nursing Instructors
• Copy of an official photo for identification (e.g. driver license, military ID, passport)
• Attend at least one FCBNA meeting or community event (see 2025 calendar/guidelines below)
• Mandatory attendance at Scholarship Awards Program on September 27, 2025
• Please upload the official transcript, letter of recommendation, confirmation of attendance at FCBNA meeting or community event, the essay, and a copy of an official photo ID with the application form

Scholarship Guidelines:

Each applicant must submit a two-page, typed, 12–point font size, 1” margins, and double-spaced essay with the application.

Essay topic:  What can you do as an individual nurse to improve the health status and/or social condition of African Americans?

The essay must also include a statement about your future goals and a description of your current extracurricular activities and community involvement.  These may include (but not limited to) community-based projects, school level projects, organizational efforts, state level student nurse activities, and activities impacting African Americans and other culturally diverse groups.

Chapter Procedure:

A member may recommend a candidate and submit their application for consideration.  However, the application must be completed by the candidate.  The candidate may submit completed application directly to FCBNA at the address shown below.  Candidates must adhere to all stated scholarship requirements to be considered for a scholarship award.

Deadline to Submit Application is September 12 2025.

All applications must be post marked or electronically submitted no later than September 12, 2025 for consideration.

The Scholarship Award

The scholarship award will range from $500 to $1,000 and there may be multiple awards.
